ANYTHING BUT NET - Tuesday August 11th 2009
For many players, the net is a bigger enemy than their opponents. Remember, it's better to miss long or wide rather than hit into the net. Consider this: You always hit the ball hard enough to get it past the net. Play the percentages and learn to hit the ball a safe distance above the net and you'll make fewer errors.
GO LEFTY FOR A BETTER BACKHAND - Monday August 03rd 2009
If you're right-handed, your left hand should drive the stroke when hitting a two-handed backhand. To learn this feeling, practice hitting left-handed forehands (right-handed forehands for lefties). Happy hitting!
FOREHAND POINTER - Sunday July 26th 2009
On the forehand, point your non-playing hand at the ball while it's on the way to your side of the court and track it with your hand to your desired contact point. Think of catching the ball with your non-playing hand. This helps promote a good shoulder turn while you bring your racquet back and coil your upper body. Happy hitting!
WATCH THE BALL - Thursday July 16th 2009
Tennis Instructors are constantly reminding their students to watch the ball, because many recreational players have a habit of looking at their target area, or watching what their opponent is doing instead of focusing on the ball. Here is a tip that will improve your consistency, and help you make better contact with fewer mis-hits: Watch the ball hitting your strings. The next time you watch a tournament on TV, notice how the pro's eyes are fixed on the ball through contact. Roger Federer is a master of this, and I think we could all agree that it is a fundamental technique that has served him well. So remember, watch the ball hit the strings, and watch your consistency and confidence improve. Happy hitting!
